The 50 biggest Superycahts In The world - Number 46 NAHLIN

Lady Yule ordered three small private cruise ships in 1929 from John Brown & Company, Clydebank with Nahlin being the first built. In 1934 Nahlin was classified as one of the biggest private cruise yachts ever built in the U.K. In 1936 Nahlin was chartered by King Edward VIII and used by him and Mrs. Wallis Simpson during their love affair. The yacht was bought in 1937 by King Carol of Romania for £120,000 and renamed Luceafarul,[1] and later Libertatea.
She was owned by the Romanian Ministry of Culture under order no. 3041[citation needed], and in service as a charter yacht, a sailing museum of yacht building and development[citation needed] as well as a floating restaurant on the river Danube.
After the Romanian revolution the yacht was sold to a privatised company and in 1999 Nahlin returned to British waters and today is registered in her home port of Glasgow. You can read the full article here

The 50 biggest Superycahts In The world - Number 29 Alfa Nero

ALFA NERO was launched to universal acclaim in 2007. She sailed off with every important award including Boat International's interior and exterior yacht of the year, Showboats' best yacht over 75 metres and Yachts International's most innovative yacht over 40 metres. In simple terms she was the finest new yacht in the world..

The upper deck is given over to the owner's residence. The aft deck includes settees that flank a skylight. The sky-lounge and dining room are surrounded with wenge panels and what has come to be known as the "golf ball" wall. Scalloped panels are covered in white lacquer with a mother-of-pearl look, giving the walls a textured effect reminiscent of abstract, flattened golf balls. The wall covering enlarges the room's appearance and sets the mood to that of a European nightclub even in the light of day. The swimming pool on the main deck converts to a heli pad which is one of the most innovative things seen on any yacht in the past.
You can read more about the yacht and buy it or charter it here

The 50 biggest Superycahts In The world - Number 30 Ice

Heavy Seas - Video Of Yachts At Sea IN huge waves

We feature tons of videos of yachts on this site and they are normally some of the most beautiful yachts in the world sailing on flat seas but I wanted to share some footage today that shows just how rough the seas can get out there sometimes and how dangerous it is for superyachts. These waves in the open seas show some crazy conditions.

Formula 1 Kimi Raikkonen Star Falls Off Superyacht Monaco

Thi is a video of the famous Formula 1 winner in what appears to be a holiday on a yacht sipping beer and getting a little tipsy. He then appears to slip on the superyacht and fall down and hit the deck. Not one of Kimi Raikkonen's best moments...

As a sports-hungry 11 year-old, Kimi Raikkonen’s youthful enthusiasm for karting quickly developed into his chosen career. The young Finn swiftly stamped his authority on the local opposition before making his mark in international events. Surprisingly, he never won a karting title, but his early racing days singled him out as a future star.

In 2000 - ten years after he had first got behind the wheel of a kart - Raikkonen made the switch to single-seaters. Choosing the UK Formula Renault series as his springboard, the previously title-less driver took the championship with seven wins, 316 points and six pole positions. Indeed, the Finn was so dominant that year, several Formula One teams, convinced of his raw talent, began to court him.

Sauber were the first to make a concrete offer and after a successful three-day test, Raikkonen landed a race drive with the Swiss squad for 2001. Given that he had only 23 single-seater race starts to his name, many questioned Peter Sauber’s confidence, but from the outset Raikkonen’s pace and consistency blew such criticisms out of the water. He ended his first Formula One season with nine championship points - and the admiration of much of the paddock, including, most notably, Ron Dennis.

Basra Breeze, the luxury yacht that once belonged to former Iraqi President Saddam Hussein, arrives back in Iraqi waters.

The 50 biggest Superycahts In The world - Number 38 Alfa Nera

The Roman emperor Nero got a lot of bad press – some say unjustifiably so. When Rome burned, Nero was said to be playing the lyre. But Nero did take the opportunity to rebuild Rome in a more grandiose and stylish way. In a parallel fashion, the commissioning brief for Alfa Nero was the chance to look afresh at what a Mediterranean yacht could be.

The results have had yacht spotters – and, no doubt, the guests of Alfa Nero – in rapture ever since.

To say that the new approaches that Dutch shipbuilder Oceanco and Monaco-based designer Dan Lenard have incorporated into this superb 83-meter (269-foot) vessel have won immense admiration would be an understatement. Alfa Nero has garnered awards in Europe, the US and even Asia for a style that cuts through the white boat wedding cakes of the Mediterranean.

Setting aside traditional large motor-yacht design templates, they have come up with an utterly streamlined concept to realize the owner’s vision of closely linking the lives of those on board with the placid waters of the Mediterranean Sea that he loves so much

The 50 biggest Superycahts In The world - Number 45 Delphine

So you like going out on the water, and you have about $70 million kicking around, what are you going to do? You are going to purchase the SS Delphine steam yacht, the last surviving beauty of the 20s era luxury boats.

Sure you could get a modern yacht, but would it have a music salon, a smoking room, a telegraph machine and an interior designed by Tiffany and Co.? Ya, we both know it wouldn’t, which is why the SS Delphine Steam Yacht is worth the investment.

The 50 biggest Superycahts In The world - Number 46 Danneborg

Her Danish Majesty's Yacht Dannebrog (A540) (Danish: KDM Dannebrog) was launched by Queen Alexandrine at Copenhagen in 1931, and commissioned on 26 May 1932. The yacht now serves as the official and private residence for HM The Queen of Denmark, HRH the Prince Consort, and members of the Royal Family when they are on official visits overseas and on summer cruises in Danish waters. When at sea, the Royal Yacht also participates in surveillance and sea-rescue services.

The Dannebrog, named after the flag of Denmark, was built in 1931–1932 at the Naval Dockyard in Copenhagen. She replaced the previous royal vessel, an 1879 paddle steamer, also called Dannebrog. The yacht has dual functions: it is primarily the Royal Yacht during peacetime; it can become a hospital ship during emergency alerts or war.

The ship’s hull is a riveted steel construction on transverse frames. The ship has a clipper stem and an elliptic stern. Viewed from the side, the ship may be divided into two sections. In front of the funnel there is space for the crew, any cargo, and the engine. At the rear is the Royal Apartment. This could accommodate patients if ever the yacht were used as a hospital. During visits to Danish and foreign ports the covered quarterdeck is used for receptions.

The Royal accommodation comprises studies for HM The Queen and HRH The Prince Consort, a dining salon, a lounge, the bedroom, etc. HM The Queen and HRH The Prince Consort have taken a personal interest in fitting out the vessel and the choice of furnishings. The Royal Apartment contains furniture and fittings from the previous 1879 Royal vessel.

The Royal Yacht Dannebrog is an independent command, administered by the Chief of HM The Queen’s Naval Household, who is a member of the Royal Household. The crew of the Dannebrog comprises 9 officers, 7 sergeants, and 36 enlisted able-seamen - all have been hand-picked from the Navy. The officers are normally seconded for periods of two to four years, whereas the able-seamen stay for just one summer.

Since it was commissioned in 1932, the yacht has travelled more than 300,000 nautical miles (600,000 km) and visited most of the ports of Denmark, Greenland, and the Faroe Islands. The yacht has also visited European ports, especially in France and cruised the Mediterranean and the Caribbean Seas.

A major overhaul was carried out in 1980/81 to extend the life of the yacht beyond the turn of the century. Having now passed that point, the 75-year-old yacht is still in excellent condition, with major improvements including replacement of the yacht's main engines. Read the full article on Linkedin here

Superyacht Rising Sun - Video

Many sites has reported this to be the ‘world’s largest yacht’, but it’s actually the second largest in the world according to The World’s 100 Largest Yachts – 2005. But anyway, this yacht is enormous!

Rising Sun was meant to be only 120 meters long, but at some point, Larry changed his mind and decided that it should be 138 meters instead. And even though it’s not officially stated anywhere, it’s because he wanted to have a bigger boat than Paul Allen of Microsoft’s Octopus, 128 meters.

The boat is built by Lürssen in Bremen, Germany, and is constructed by Jon Bannenberg, and has a total living space of 8 000 square meters – quite impressive, or what do you say? And why is the boat in Stockholm? Well, Larry Ellison is fond of sailing, and owns the american team for Americas cup, which takes place in Sweden between August 23 to September 3 2005. Larry Ellison will come and watch the competition for a couple of days, and wanted a nice place to stay at… Hehe

Some other facts about Larrys yacht The Rising Sun:

Length: 452.75ft (138 m) long
Cruising speed: 28 knots
Four diesels giving an output of 48 000 horsepower.
Production cost: US$200+ (In fact, it’s for sale.)
Total living space: 8 000 square meters.
Huge inside swimming pool
Extensive wine cellar
A cinema
Basketball court that doubles as a helicopter pad
Suites for 16 guests
82 rooms on five storeys
Space for private submarine

Larry Ellison is the ninth richest man in the world and founder and CEO of Oracle. He’s worth around $18 billion, so he can afford to have a boat of this magnituted – even if it costs over $13 million each year to just maintain it…

Superyachts in St Tropez - Video And Photos

One of the biggest centers for superyachts in the world is St Tropez where all the biggest boats come to in the summer months. This short video shows some of the boatds as they dock. Mega Yachts.

Saint-Tropez (Sant Tropetz in Occitan) is a town, 104 km to the east of Marseille, in the Var department of the Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur region of southeastern France. It is also the principal town in the canton of Saint-Tropez.
It is located on the French Riviera, and it is known today for its famous and extremely wealthy summertime guests. It has been dubbed the 'playground to jetsetters, fashion models, and millionaires', and it is most-enduringly known as the place the iconic Brigitte Bardot "discovered" and for its role in the liberation of southern France during World War II.
Saint-Tropez has had a varied history. It was a fifteenth-century military stronghold, an unassuming fishing village at the beginning of the twentieth century, and the first town on this coast to be liberated during World War II (as part of Operation Dragoon). After the war, it became an internationally-known seaside resort, renowned principally because of the influx of artists of the French New Wave in cinema and the Yé-yé movement in music. In latter years, it has been a resort for the European and American jet set and the inevitable hordes of tourists in search of a little Provençal authenticity and an occasional celebrity sighting.
The inhabitants of Saint-Tropez are called Tropéziens[1], and the town is familiarly called "St-Trop".

Pelorus Superyacht Video - Roman Abramovich

Original article and more information on Wikipedia here
elorus (from the Greek word ¨pelorios¨, meaning ¨vast¨) is the world's sixteenth largest luxury yacht at 377 feet 3 inches (115 metres) in length. It was built at the Lürssen yard in Bremen, Germany to the design of Tim Heywood and was launched in 2003.
It was briefly owned by a Saudi businessman who sold it to Russian billionaire Roman Abramovich the following year. Abramovich had it refitted to his own requirements by Blohm & Voss. This included the addition of a second helicopter pad forward, four new zero-speed stabilizers and modifications to the exhaust, mast and stern. Abramovich also owned Ecstasea, and gave away Le Grand Bleu to friend Eugene Shvidler.
Pelorus is powered by two 5,500-hp Wärtsilä 12v 26 engines, which will do a maximum 19 knots but often cruises between 12 to 14 knots. Details about the interiors are scant, as Abramovich is protective of his family's privacy and highly security conscious.
The yacht has a number of tenders on board and a garage full of 'toys', including jet skis and wave runners. A full time crew of up to 46 people lives aboard all year long, and a large security contingent comes and leaves with the family.
Pelorus will often be found cruising around the Western Mediterranean during the summers and commonly ventures down through the Suez for the winters.
In 2005 Abramovich lent Pelorus to Frank Lampard and John Terry for two weeks as a bonus for being the two best players at his English football club Chelsea F.C. the previous season. After John Terry married his fiancee Toni Poole at Blenheim Palace on 15 June 2007, they had a two-week honeymoon on Pelorus in the Mediterranean.[1]

Maltese Falcon Superyacht Sailing Boat - Video

Original article here
Damon Roberts of Insensys, Ltd. was responsible for designing and manufacturing the DynaRig sail system of The Maltese Falcon in the Tuzla shipyard, Turkey. The design, testing and manufacturing of the system was completed over a three year period. All aspects of the system were incorporated and tested to ensure that the design and finite element analysis matched the actual loads whilst sailing.
The DynaRig owes its origin to work done in the 1960s by Wilhelm Prölss; at the time he believed the system could provide additional propulsion for ships. The DynaRig is effectively a square rig, the mast is freestanding and the yards are connected rigidly to the mast. In this case each mast supports six yards. The yards, unlike a conventional square rigger, have built-in camber of 12%. The sails are set between the yards in such a way that when deployed there are no gaps to the sail plan, enabling each mast's sail plan to work as a single sail. The sails, when not deployed, furl into the mast. The sail is trimmed to the wind direction by rotating the mast. As there is no rigging, the yards have no restriction on rotation and this, taken together with the curved (shaped) yards, low windage and effective single-piece sail, combine to give the rig improved aerodynamic efficiency compared to a traditional square rigger.
The masts are approximately 58 m (190 ft) in height above the bottom bearing. The DynaRig concept calls for an elongated section (to reduce the drag) and this needs to be symmetrical. As the rig can be tacked to allow flow in both directions, the mast rotates about deck and keel bearings.
Insensys also incorporated their fiber optical strain monitoring system that monitors the loads on the rigs to ensure that the carbon fiber structures are never overloaded whilst the yacht is sailing. The fiber Bragg grating system was embedded within the rigs during fabrication of the carbon structure. The system monitors the strains in real time and transmits the loads to the bridge such that they are understood whilst sailing.

What Is A Super Yacht?

This article is with thanks to Wikipedia and explains what a superyacht is and where the term originates from.

more recently, over the last decade or two, there has been an increase in the number and popularity of large private luxury yachts, over 24 metres. Luxury yachts typically have no real home port as such although a yacht must be registered in a port of the country of which it fly the flag. (Many times the yacht will have never been to the port.) They are particularly bountiful in the Mediterranean in summer and the Caribbean Sea in winter. (Yachts that go back and forth between the Caribbean and Mediterranean in the winter and summer are said to be doing the Milk Run.) Yachts will dock in a port of choosing while the crew does maintenance work and waits for owners or guests to arrive. The vessels then will do short cruises with the owners and/or guests aboard. Typical destinations in Spain and the French and Italian Rivieras include Cannes, Antibes, St. Tropez, Monte Carlo, Portofino, Porto Cervo, Puerto Banus, Puerto Portals and Palma, Majorca, although increasingly luxury yachts are cruising in more remote areas of the world. Antigua is one of the main ports in the Windward Islands of the Caribbean and hosts a Charter Show at the beginning of the winter season.

With the rising demand for luxury yachts there has been a concomitant increase in the numbers of custom boat building companies and yacht charter brokers. Luxury boat building and yacht charter companies are predominantly based in the United States and Western Europe but are also increasingly found in New Zealand, Asia and Eastern Europe. European manufacturers such as Ferretti, Azimut, Azimut-Benetti, Feadship, Shonelle, Sunseeker and Lürssen dominate the very top end of the yacht building market.

Eclipse Yacht Video - Russian Billionaire Yacht

M/Y Eclipse is a luxury motor yacht constructed by Blohm + Voss in Hamburg, Germany. Its exterior and interior are designed by Terence Disdale Design and its naval architect is Francis design.[3] The yacht is owned by Roman Abramovich, and is 163.5 m (536 ft) long,[4] and it was delivered to Abramovich on 9 December 2010. This made Eclipse the world's largest private yacht, 0.5 metres (1 ft 8 in) longer than the world's previous biggest yacht Dubai, which belongs to Sheikh Mohammed, the ruler of Dubai.[5] The yacht's initial cost was estimated at € 340 million (circa $485 million US),[5] but a September 2009 report indicated that final costs could approach € 800 million ($1.2 billion US).[6]

Eclipse has two helicopter pads, 24 guest cabins, two swimming pools, several hot tubs and a disco hall.[7] It also comes equipped with three launch boats, and a mini-submarine that is capable of submerging to 50 meters. Approximately 70 crew members are needed to operate the yacht.

For security, Eclipse is fitted with intruder detection systems and a German-built missile defense system.[5][8] The windows in Abramovich's master suite and the yacht's bridge are also fitted with bullet-proof glass and both are armor plated.[8] The yacht is also reportedly equipped with an anti-paparazzi shield in the form of lasers that sweep the surroundings, and when they detect a CCD, they shine a light right at the camera to prevent the photograph. According to The Times, these don’t run all the time, so friends and guests should still be able to take pictures. Instead, they will be activated when guards spot likely professional photographers nearby.[6] How such a device would actually function is unclear, and there is no evidence that this device even exists beyond rumors.

Mega Yacht le Grand BLeu - Videos And Photos Capri

After departing the yard, Le Grand Bleu headed for the Mediterranean and caused quite a stir wherever it went. It was in Monaco in May 2004, serving as a base for Abramovich during Chelsea F.C.'s fixtures against AS Monaco in the UEFA Champions League.

The yacht needed work when it visited New Zealand over the Christmas New Year period of 2006/7. The work was carried out by Yachtwork .

Its latest drydock and refit was in Port Canaveral, FL in 2008. This refit included a new "green" wastewater treatment system in addition to the current Lloyd's certified system. The new treatment system allows the ship to reuse the wastewater after treatment rather than discharging the wastewater overboard into the sea. As of January 2010, it could frequently be seen docked in Nassau, Bahamas.

Currently, it lies on anchor in the Solent (12 October 2010).

Le Grand Blue - Video Loading Superyacht Tender

Le Grand Bleu is one of the largest private yachts in the world at 104 m (341 ft) in length[1]. It was built at the Bremer Vulkan yard in Bremen, Germany, and was launched in 2000. It was designed by Stefano Pastrovich and constructed by Kusch Yachts. [2] It was previously owned by John McCaw Jr., an American businessman, who sold her to Russian businessman Roman Abramovich in 2002. Abramovich had it refitted to his own preferences by HDW in Kiel, Germany. This included an internal refit and the addition of a 16-foot (4.9 m) swim platform.

In June 2006, Abramovich gave Le Grand Bleu to its current owner, friend and business partner Eugene Shvidler.

Le Grand Bleu is powered by two 3,600 hp Wärtsilä engines. Details about the interiors are scanty as Abramovich is protective of his family's privacy and highly security-conscious, but they were designed by Terence Disdale.

The yacht itself was completed in 2008 by German shipyard Blohm and Voss, the same company that launched the Bismarck warship in 1939 and cost £200m and took nearly five years to build.

She is propelled by twin 9,000 kW MAN diesel engines and with a cruising speed of 19.5 knots and a range of approximately 6,500 nautical miles, ‘A’ has the capability to cross the Atlantic in less than seven days.

Riveting in design and certainly not light on performance, the yacht also delivers when it comes to luxury.
A billionaire's boat

‘A’ was custom built for Russian self-made billionaire Andrey Melnichenko and his wife Aleksandra, who inspired the yacht’s name, and assuring his powerful client’s comfort must have been high on Starck’s to do list.

It boasts three pools, one of which has built-in counter-current jets, a helipad on the foredeck, a gym and a wealth of bright and airy living space.

The aluminium and glass superstructure contains what Starck describes as a ‘loft apartment’, a master cabin running almost 25 m in length with a wide balcony at the rear.

Maltese Falcon Superyacht - Video

It was built after the dynaship concept, a 1960s invention of the German hydraulics engineer Wilhelm Prölss, which was intended to operate commercial freight sailing ships with as few crew as possible. The ship has fifteen square sails (five per mast), stored inside the mast; they can fully unfurl into tracks along the yards in six minutes. The three carbon fiber masts, which are free-standing and able to rotate, were manufactured and assembled by a company financed by Perkins at the Perini Navi Istanbul "Yildiz Gemi" (literally: Star Ship) yard in Tuzla, 50 mi (80 km) east of Istanbul, Turkey, under the supervision of the English company Insensys and Dutch company Gerard Dijkstra & Partners. Other design was provided by Ken Freivokh Design. The Maltese Falcon was the third yacht built by Perini for Perkins.

The yacht is easily controlled and has been seen to sail off her anchor and away from berths within harbors. The yacht's sophisticated computer detects parameters such as wind speed automatically and displays key data. An operator must always activate the controls, yet it is possible for a single person to pilot the yacht. In a radio interview for the BBC World Service's Global Business programme broadcast in December 2007, Perkins claimed that he personally wrote some of the yacht's unique control software.

The Maltese Falcon has two 1,800 horsepower (1,300 kW) Deutz engines running at 1,800 rpm with a top speed of 20 kn (23 mph; 37 km/h) with minimal wave-making and virtually no vibration or noise and with a smooth and non-turbulent wake.
